Art inspired by the people and places around me.

WELCOME

Hello and welcome to my art website. Thank you for having a look.

As you will see on this site, I paint quite a lot of landscapes, trying to capture a sense of time and place. These are generally painted outdoors, in front of the subject and are refined at home where there is a chance to stand back and see what has, and hasn't, worked. Many of these landscapes are Gower views but I also like to find subjects elsewhere in Swansea and on my travels. There are also some from Hertfordshire where we used to live.

I enjoy experimenting and trying out different ideas. There are pictures here which aim to tell stories, there are still lifes and portraits. I mainly paint in oil or acrylic but also produce some collage. I hope you will see something you like.

about me

Hello!

Painting is my hobby but has grown more important in recent years now that I am semi-retired. I have no formal art training but have tried to work out ways of creating images that convey something of a place or an idea. When I visit an art gallery, I find I am generally most inspired to go out and paint by impressionist type work. Pictures with loose, painterly brushstrokes and which capture light and space are often my favourites. Among the Impressionists, Monet and Sisley particularly appeal to me. I am also greatly impressed by the work of John Singer Sergeant and the Spanish painter Joaquin Sorolla, both masters of light. But I also enjoy paintings which are less precisely painted, using bright colours and simplified shapes; methods which many more contemporary artists use.
