Clifton Hill is close to the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery in Swansea. It is quite ridiculously steep. The disused college buildings on the right are a totally different scale from the terraced houses opposite. The view is across town and the docks to the hills beyond. This combination makes it a challenging but interesting place to paint. To add some life, I included the figure struggling up the hill with shopping. I tried to keep the brushwork loose. It started as a rectangular painting because that was the shape of canvas I had available, but I thought it would work much better square so I mounted the canvas on a board and added extra canvas at the bottom.
