Leiston Abbey, Suffolk

A farm house was built within the ruins of Leiston Abbey after the disolution of the monasteries. Parts of the abbey church were used as a barn. My painting shows the rather strange justaposition of these buildings. I painted it in two visits. I wanted to show it in sunlight because it helps to define the shapes of the buildings, but the sun only broke through quite briefly so I had to hurry to capture that effect. A photo helped to complete it but I only adjusted it slightly in order to keep the looseness of the brush strokes. Oil on canvas.
