This image emerged from laying down a background colour to paint over. However, it started to look like smoke so I added chimneys and then buildings and made the smoke rise more specifically from those chimneys. I had in mind images I had seen of the lower Swansea Valley in its filthy industrial heyday. An example is below. My picture is not, therefore, an accurate reflection of those old images but an impression of such industrial scenes.
