Etretat

In 2022 we went on holiday to northern France to visit places associated with the Impressionists. Etretat was famously painted by Monet on many occasions. I sat down behind  the sea wall and some boats to paint, partly to avoid the wind which blows a canvas about and partly to avoid the public who might feel sorry for a Monet wannabe. In my defence, it is a great place to paint and although my effort is far from a Monet in quality, I appreciate the broken brushstrokes look quite impressionistic. That is mainly because the cliffs consist of horizontal bands of rock which actually do create a series of sideways shapes. The sea was also breaking into wavelets and the beach is pebbly so small strokes of paint make a lot of sense. The darker area above the horizon was, I discovered, approaching rain clouds. I had to pack up when the rain began but there was time to capture something of the sunlight across the cliff and beach. Acrylic on canvas.
