We lived not far from Ware in Hertfordshire. There is a stretch of the canal that is known for its waterside gazebos. This fairly large canvas shows one of these structures which I think were built as garden rooms in which to take tea. They are all different and the overall effect is most attractive. The little roofed structure in the foreground is, I assume, a small landing stage. The picture was painted on site beside the tow path but I added the boat afterwards, partly in order to link across the line where the water meets the wall, which was otherwise cutting the picture in two. The taller building in the background is one of the old maltings buildings for which Ware was well known. Oil on canvas. 76x61cm.
