My overriding memory of painting by the river Beane near Waterford, Herts, was the cows. One decided it would lick the back of my canvas pushing the easel. I tried shooing it away but after appraising me for a while, it carried on. It was impossible to paint. Eventually, I decided to shove it away. I discovered that when you push half a ton of cow standing on 4 legs, nothing happens. It's immovable. It realised it had won and started on my canvas again. I gave up but while packing up one of its chums took the bag my easel came in and ran off across the field with it dropping it some distance away. Who knew cows could have such fun.
