This was based on a real cafe my daughter and I visited in Lisbon but, as well as a hastily taken photo, I used my memory and imagination to create this painting. I hope it makes the viewer wonder about the couple and what brought them there. The cafe had large scenes on blue and white tiles and the walls were painted in these bright colours. I reduced the saint statues on the fridge to one. There is a pastel de nata (Portuguese custard tart - I love these) with coffee and a pastry on the table in the foreground but the figures on the left and right (my daughter posed for this one) are deliberately cut off to avoid them becoming a focus rather than the couple. The painting on the wall shows a singer with musicians performing Fado, the emotional traditional music which is now often performed for tourists in the city. Oil on board. 50x40cm.
